Defending Freedom of Speech: Challenging the Unjust Persecution of Momodou Sabally And Sheriffo SONKO…

3 min read

The recent actions taken by the government to target Momodou Sabally and Sheriffo SONKO, for expressing their legitimate outrage are not only ill-advised but also futile.

The attempt to link their public statements, born out of deep distress, with a threat against our law enforcement officers lacks any basis and is a clear miscarriage of justice.

Let us not forget the circumstances leading to this situation: during the court proceedings involving the current chairman of Brikama Area Council, Ramou Sabally, the sister of Momodou Sabally, was reportedly singled out among the attendees and subjected to a brutal assault by a uniformed officer stationed at the courthouse.

In such a situation, where a close family member was harmed and required immediate medical attention, what could one expect but a passionate reaction from a concerned family member?

For instance, if he stated that those responsible for attacking his family (his sister) will face consequences for their actions, how can such a reaction be construed as a threat against our officers?

It’s important to emphasize that no officer, regardless of their rank or affiliation, stands above the law. So, who authorized the targeting and ruthless beating of Momodou Sabally’s sister?

Were these officers deployed to uphold law and order, or were they instruments of repression, following unlawful directives to brutalize citizens?

In our legal system, no one is exempt from the laws of our nation. Momodou Sabally retains his fundamental rights, including the right to issue carefully worded statements and freely express his views, in alignment with his constitutional privileges as a citizen.

Considering that his own sister was subjected to a state-sponsored act of violence, he is well within his rights to react strongly to such barbarism.

His statement that those responsible for the violence against his family will be held accountable cannot be taken out of context.

Regrettably, the initial statement issued by our police department regarding his arrest and detention suggests they are investigating the incident involving the officers’ tragic deaths.

Moreover, it implies they are probing whether his emotional response on social media may be linked to the crime, but now, we are hearing that they both are being charged with threatening public officials with violence.

Instead of concentrating on investigating the crimes committed by their own officers, the police appear to be trying to fabricate charges against him by connecting his statements to the unfortunate incident involving our officers.

We, the defenders of justice and freedom of speech, call on the government to immediately cease the unjust persecution of Momodou Sabally.

His right to express his grievances must be respected, and any attempt to silence him or shift blame onto a grieving family member is a travesty of justice.

I, once again, personally advise President Adama Barrow, to end this witch-hunt and drop all these baseless charges against Momodou Sabally and Sheriffo Sonko.

NB: We also insist that the officers responsible for the assault on “Ramou Sabally” be held accountable for their actions. Justice must be served without prejudice or political motivation.

In conclusion, we demand a thorough and impartial investigation into the tragic deaths of our officers and the real perpetrators be brought to justice.
