Defying Democracy: Macky Sall’s Unrelenting Assault on Senegal…

3 min read

The shocking revelation from the head of Senegal’s electoral commission further peels back the layers of an ongoing political and judicial quagmire that has plagued the country for years. It’s now painfully clear that Dictator Macky Sall and his criminal allies remain steadfast in their mission to dismantle the very foundations of our democracy.

One cannot help but recall the words of a former interior minister, who often reminded Senegalese that their nation respects the rule of law and that both the government and its citizens will abide by the court’s decisions. Even Dictator Macky Sall himself, in a recent national address, emphasized his commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and following court rulings. However, the irony is striking.

The same courts that uncovered a cynical plot to undermine the legitimacy of political opponents, who were unlawfully detained and falsely accused of numerous lies to justify their exclusion from the presidential race, are now at the heart of the matter. Why, then, does the state conspire to manipulate the electoral commission to defy court verdicts and fail to reinstate our beloved leader in the electoral system, as mandated by the supreme court?

The flimsy argument that he is delaying action due to a request from the former minister of justice to remove President OUSMAN SONKO’s name from the electoral register is nothing short of absurd. His rationale for not acting on the recent court ruling—that the state intends to appeal the decision—borders on the nonsensical.

One must now question his qualifications for the position, as his thinking appears entirely disconnected from reality. He has no authority to defy court orders, nor is it his business to speculate on the state’s actions.

His deliberate abuse of authority and dereliction of duty may have unforeseen consequences if he successfully blocks the court’s verdict. For the dictatorial regime of Macky Sall and his criminal associates, if they wish to appeal a verdict, let them do so independently. Banking on the government’s intentions to appeal is an affront to our collective rights and freedoms as citizens in a civilized society.

The ECOWAS, if it is worth its salt, should reprimand the brutal regime of Macky Sall for blatantly ignoring national and international laws to which Senegal is a signatory, not to mention the principles of good governance. It’s time for the world to witness the rampant assault on democracy in Senegal and to question the credibility of those who claim to uphold justice and the rule of law while actively subverting them. Senegal’s future and the ideals of democracy are at stake.
