Presidential Ethics Under Scrutiny: The Curious Case of the ‘Gifted’ Hippopotamus!!!

3 min read

It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of disappointment that we observe how the Gambian presidency, an office entrusted with the highest responsibility, has seemingly become a realm of private interests, bereft of concern for our citizens’ welfare.

Recent reports, accompanied by deeply disturbing visuals, depict the unloading of a ‘dead hippopotamus’ at the residence of President Adama Barrow. It is claimed that this behemoth beast was presented as a gift by a hunter who, for some incomprehensible reason, saw it fit to bestow the President with such a grisly offering.

However, as conscientious citizens, we can’t help but question the veracity of this tale. It appears more a feeble attempt to gloss over the shocking and scandalous realities that have resurfaced in our country than a genuine act of goodwill by a hunter.

It is only logical to assume that the conspicuous presence of this animal could not remain hidden, so, regrettably, the explanation might have been tailored to mislead the public and divert attention from the unsettling truths concealed beneath.

Recalling our shared history, we can’t help but ask: when have our ancestors ever recounted tales of their families, starving to the point of resorting to the consumption of a deceased hippopotamus? We, as Gambians, have traditionally held these creatures in deep regard.

The case of the famous hunter, Abu Khan, who etched his name into the annals of our nation’s history, did not involve hunting and consuming a hippopotamus. In fact, the idea of consuming such a majestic mammal remains beyond our collective imagination.

What truly defies logic is the notion that a sitting head of state, particularly one who identifies as a Muslim, would even entertain the idea of partaking in a practice that contradicts his faith. The consumption of such wildlife not only disregards our traditions but also raises profound ethical questions.

The President, as an elected leader, is entrusted with a solemn duty that encompasses the protection and conservation of our wildlife and their natural habitats. He should be the one discouraging the senseless killing of our hippos, rather than inadvertently encouraging such an act of animal rights abuse in our country.

These are questions that must be addressed by the President. The pursuit of such an act, which endangers our wildlife species in their natural habitats, brings into question the commitment of the administration to duties that encompass wildlife protection and conservation.

As Gambia’s citizens, we cannot stand idly by while such actions cast a dark shadow over the future of our natural heritage. President Barrow, please heed the call of responsible stewardship, for the grace of the Almighty knows no bounds. It is through our actions that we secure a legacy, and the path you choose to follow is one that history will remember.
